Richard Branson is preparing to buy the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA).
The Virgin mogul, a passionate and avid kiteboarder, has bought the rights of the PKRA World Tour, in an unusual joint-venture agreement with BEST Kiteboarding and the Spanish entrepreneur behind clothing company Zara.
According to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine, the deal is sealed, and a new umbrella company will start controlling the PKRA World Tour at the end of August, when the Tarifa Pro Kite Tour 2014 runs in Spain.
Richard Branson is absolutely into kiteboarding. The 64-year-old businessman discovered the sport in the 21st century, but he rapidly helped boosting its growth with a series of spectacular events and moves.
He rode with naked models; he set Guinness World Records; he crossed the English Channel; he organized kite events in his Necker Island, and he lobbied for kiteboarding in the Olympic Games. Now, he’s taking one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the world to the center stage of action sports.
The Professional Kiteboard Riders Association manages and runs the official world kiteboarding tour, as sanctioned by the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), but it was not the first structure to control it. The Kiteboard Pro World Tour (KPWT) was the inaugural world tour circuit, but it was replaced in 2009 by the PKRA.
Richard Branson faces many challenges. Improving the competitive feel of the events, solidifying the kiteboarding classes, improving media coverage, broadcasting events online and increasing the prize money at each venue, are only a few goals that lie ahead.
It is rumored that the PKRA will add Big Air Contest to the circuit with a huge prize purse, with the Aim of taking kiteboarding to the masses. No one can argue that Red Bull has pulled off the hugely successful King Of the Air in Cape Town for the past 2 years. This event, along with the help of Ruben Lenten has been groundbreaking in creating a new generation of ‘Extreme Kiteboarders’.
It’s really exciting to see how the sport will evolve over the next 2 years, The kiteboarding revolution is out there. It’s time to fly.
The Best team met up to celebrate the arrival of the new 2015 gear. Everybody knows that the Best characters like to shred their hearts out! The “FreerRide” project is an idea that started in 2011. Four riders from different brands started traveling together and filming how they wanted the sport to look and be represented.
Four riders quoted saying, this is a no-mess, un-brand motivated representation of what we want kiteboarding to be and what it means to us as we travel to some of the best spots and biggest wakestyle events throughout the year, to just have fun and ride!
This video goes to South Africa, Greece, Cape Hatteras, Egypt and Russia, with some kiteboarding and wakeboarding action in each spot.
Sit back and enjoy, the video will be available for free download soon. The idea being that you can burn your own DVD/movie, share it at home or play it in your shops!! Spread the word!!
A big THANKS to all involved who made this possible and helped us along the way! The KiteLauncher!!

At 17h06 on Tuesday the 8th of April, NSRI Port Alfred volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a kitesurfer in difficulty at Eastern Beach, Port Alfred in South Africa
A NSRI Port Alfred volunteer sea rescue duty crew responded to the beach to find Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts being performed by bystanders on a 66 year old local man.
The man had reportedly collapsed unconscious, suspected to be from unknown medical causes, while kite-surfing with his son and fellow kite-boarders and he had been brought to shore breathless and pulseless. CPR immediately commenced on the beach and the alarm was raised.
A past NSRI Port Alfred volunteer was amongst the kite boarders and he assisted with the CPR efforts.
On arrival on-scene our NSRI Port Alfred medics continued with CPR efforts and our local Multi-Security control room was instrumental in summoning additional emergency medical support to respond to the scene.
Guardmed ambulance services arrived and took over with advanced life support CPR which continued in the ambulance en route to hospital. Extensive CPR efforts were continued in hospital but sadly, after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted, the man was declared deceased by doctors.
Sincerest condolences are expressed to the family.
Dirty Habits would also like to Thank the NSRI, (National Sea Rescue Institute)
The Sea Rescue is the charity that saves lives on South African waters.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is run by 940 highly skilled, unpaid volunteers who are on standby day and night throughout the year.

Well in case you missed the boat. This is how The Crew at Dirty Habits does summer.
Amongst the Chaos this summer and all the international legends visiting The Dirty Habits crib, including Nitro Circus’ Erik Roner, Wake legends Shawn Watson and Kevin Henshaw, World champ freestyle paraglider Marvin Ogger, extreme kiters Ruben Lenten, Robbie Naish… we also had had Freeride Project and Riplslix Productions founder Tom Court spend the summer with us along with Crane jumper, Nick Jacobsen. Between the 3 boys including Mr. Dirty Habits Graham Howes, 3 very different projects began to merge into one common idea, The quest for epicness. and although the lines are still blurred between our different lives existing at other parts of the world, one thing remains certain. we sure as hell are having a good time. Here is the evidence. the teaser… just the tip of the iceburg.

Wakestyle now, is a term thrown around pretty loosely these days in kiteboarding, which is unusual because as recently as two years ago, it was a term that essentially only referred to about %1 of the kiteboarding population. However with the recent emergence of bindings on the world tour, you see more and more people throwing that word around. It seems now as if almost all the top pros fall into the same category, what follows can be considered the distinction… In Patrick Wieland’s new short film “Distinction” produced by Mauicio Abreu, riders Alex Fox and Sam Light establish the standard and return the word “wakestyle” to its original roots.

Kevin Langeree can pretty much call himself a Cape Town Local, he has been spending the summers in Blouberg for longer than i can remember. He is the definition of waterman; SUP, surf, spearfish, big waves and ofcourse a world champion kiteboarder. So to get this dude to sit down for 10 minutes and ask him a few questions was a task on it’s own.
With the whole kiteboarding world moving onto riding wakeboarding boots on their kiteboards, it’s a pretty straight forward progression for your average pro wakestyle kiter. However for Kevin, it’s not that easy. If you have been lucky enough to see Kevin freeriding, you would understand, he is either doing 40ft high board-offs, riding his board one footed, riding it on his ass, flying through the air with it under his arm, climbing a coconut tree with it or doing Jesus walks. Now tie a board to his feet and see what happens. But progression is progression, and when you are chasing a 2nd world title, that little bit more power, or more board control can mean the world of difference in a PKRA final. So lets see what he has to say about riding boots, and if it is actually ‘the way forward’.
Home Town: Noordwijk/ Cape Town
Started riding: Spring 2000
Top Places to Ride: Cape Town hands down! Hawaii is really sick as well.
Favourite Moves: All depends on the conditions but bootsing as high as possible never gets boring.
Other Dirty Habits: Farting on airplanes feel extra good.
Gear: Naish Torches and Monarch 134 for freestyle and Park and global for waves.
Sponsors: Naish, O’Neill, G-Shock and Sinner eyewear
Twitter: www.twitter.com/ kevin_langeree
Dirty Habits: So Kevin, we see you riding in boots now, you have always hated the idea of riding boots as it’s so restricting and style and trick. Tell us about how it lead to you riding boots?
Kevin: Yea I’ve never really liked boots cause it limits your movement. But the riding and the landings with freestyle are getting so much harder that you need a lot of control on the landings and the only way to achieve that is to ride boots.
Dirty Habits: It is a huge change for you, your whole style and energy on the water is about freedom and fun, board offs, one footers, jesus walks etc…. isn’t it frustrating having your feet locked into boots all the time now.
Kevin: Yes it really is a big change for me and sometimes a bit frustrating but I feel that riding boots give me an other challenge. I love challenges cause they keep me motivated. But I must say that it isn’t as big as a different as I thought it would be, I actually feel pretty confident on them already. Board offs are a lot harder…
Dirty Habits: Do you see yourself riding boots full time in the future, or is this a purely competition and power thing?
Kevin: For comps I’ll definitely keep riding them but I would never go on a trip without throwing a par of straps in. The cool thing about kiteboarding is that there are so many ways of riding and it doesn’t really matter if you ride boots, straps, strapless, finless, waxless ect. As long as you are having loads of fun, then that will be the only thing that matters.
Dirty Habits: The big debate is whether it is safer riding boots or not, some argue you are ‘locked in’ and more secure in boots, others say there is more risk as you are ‘stuck’ to your board on big crashes. Do you think boots has are safer and maybe better in terms of knee injuries and ankle.
Kevin: That is a pretty good question. Being locked in and not you losing your board and being stable on landing can prevent you from crashing hard. But if you crash it’s NOT really nice to have a board stuck on your feet. Boots definitely give you a better whiplash on hard crashes. I think it doesn’t really make a different whether you ride boots or straps.
Dirty Habits: A lot of your fans will follow your footsteps and go straight out and buy boots (even if they are still learning to jump. When do you think a rider is ‘ready’ to start riding boots.
Kevin: That is hard to say… I would ride boots when every you feel comfortable enough to ride them. It took quite a while for me
Dirty Habits: Give us some pro’s and cons about riding boots
– You don’t lose your board
– Landings are more stable and soft
– Takeoffs can be more powerful
– No cold feet
– Limits your movement on some tricks
– Takes a while to put them on
– Your board is heavier
Dirty Habits: Ok. Lets get serious now about these Playboy bunnies, tell us about these lovely ladies who volunteered to model for this shoot in Cape Town. They put on quite a show for you.
Kevin: That was just SOOO hilarious! Haha this chick was so on it and the only thing she wanted was posing as sexy as possible. She did pretty good don’t you think! HAHA The only thing she needs to do is to bring a visit to the dentist for some new front tooth. Haha thanks for the laugh
Dirty Habits: I heard the Playboy Girls you did the shoot with in Nitro City Panama were jealous that they missed out on the action.
Kevin: Yea they called me and sounded really upset… Guess the only way to make them happy is to do an other shoot with them!
Dirty Habits: You obviously will be beck in Cape Town for the summer to train and enjoy the life down here, any other plans for new movie projects, clinics or anything like that, which we can look forward to.
Kevin: Still planning some things. But I’m really looking forward on heading back to CT. That place is just magic!
Dirty Habits: Lasty.. Hidden line’s movie you filmed with Eyeforce was a huge success around the world. I’d say it was the biggest production kiteboarding has seen. Do you think we will see a Hidden lines 2? or another coloration with Nick or Youri?
Kevin: Yea it really was a big success even bigger than I had every dreamed off. I had a meeting with eyeforce a couple weeks ago and we talked about some new plans. But they will stay secret for a little. Sorry…
