Matti Buys takes Dylan Lightfoot surfing in Joburg

DSC_5634

Images and Words:  Anthony Churchyard Photography

This month, Dylan Lightfoot, 2014’s SA surf champion in the U/20 division, Billabong U/20 Mossel Bay Champion and Jeffreys Bay RVCA supertrial winner, joined up with Matti Buys, the renowned SA wakeskate champ, in Johannesburg for a few days.
As Johannesburg is landlocked, Matti set out to show Dylan how the Vaalies get their board on water fix in Gauteng.

DSC_5990

On Thursday the 6th of November, we traveled with Dylan and Matti to the Vaal River to join Shaun Faccio from Tige boats. The Tige boat produces a wake of about one and a half foot. Dylan, obviously not a rookie when it comes to waves, showed the locals how to ride this endless wave on his surfboard.
Matti is a natural on most boards and kept his cool following Dylan’s example, but then he set the pace on the wakeskate, showing Dylan how wearing shoes and a shirt are the stylish way to ride on water.

The next day, Matti and Dylan hit Stoke City cable park, Matti’s home turf for some wakeskate training.

DSC_5604

Matti described his friend’s skills by saying,
“Dyl is one of the most talented dudes I know. He killed wake surfing on Thursday and then went out on Friday with the wake-skate and stuck the kicker and then a pop shuv on his first try.”

Dylan was stoked with the experience,
“It was motivating having Matti cheer me on and give me some coaching tips on how to hit the kicker and lay down a pop shuv. It was really cool to see Matti in action, his unpredictable approach with a cool mellow style is awesome to watch, I definitely gathered inspiration from watching him.”

DSC_5614

These unusual friends have both just returned from internationl trips.

Matti spent the USA summer traveling with the US Wakeskate tour, in between the tour he joined the SA Cable team in Norway for Cable Worlds, returning to the US to spend time with the legendary wakeskater and filmmaker, Dieter Humpsch.

Dylan recently returned from a trip to Portugal where he competed in the U/20 World Champs, he’s also recently been to Brazil where he participated in a 6 star qualifying series event.
Dylan and Matti met up in California during the US Open. They cruised around together, visiting the FOX head offices, and catching some local surf.

DSC_6229

Dylan has one more trip for the year – he heads to China for two more competitions at the end of November, and then he’ll begin planning his campaign for the beginning of next year, which will more than likely include a trip to Hawaii and Australia.

Matti plans to fit in a few wakeskate road trips this summer. He’s also hoping to see a few wakeskate only contests go down this year in SA.

DSC_6104

We are excited to see athletes crossing paths and encouraging each other in their pursuits.

We wish them the best of luck as they travel the world representing our beautiful South Africa in water sports.

Raph Derome – Beyond Perception

Is this the future of wakeboarding?

Get a taste of Raph Derome’s brilliant new wakeboarding edit with a teaser for Beyond Perception.

raph derome

People have different perceptions of Raph Derome. As a guy that prefers to keep a low profile and living the life of a self-described introvert, it’s sometimes difficult to express who he really is to those around him. But that’s why he lets his wakeboarding speak for him.

With an endless drive and dedication to wakeboarding, Raph is truly in it for the love of the game. Never quite satisfied, wakeboarding to him is about the constant pursuit of progression and evolving his own unique vision of the sport.

Beyond Perception, made by Red Bull Media House in partnership with Malibu Boats and Billabong, is the product of two years of Raph’s tireless effort to capture the soul of wakeboarding and a visual declaration to the masses that there is much more to wakeboarding beyond contests.

Two years in the making, Raph’s latest video project is the product of a tireless effort to capture the soul of the sport and a visual declaration to the masses that there is much more to wakeboarding beyond contests. Wake the Goon Video

wake the goon

“The event Wake the Goon which was proudly supported by Fox Racing South Africa and this saw some of SA’s most talented wakeskaters battle it out behind the winch for the R5,000 prize purse. La Mercy Lagoon made the scene for this event and the weather was cold and windy but this did not hold the riders back as they glided through the water busting aerial manouvers out of the man made pool and hitting some radical and technical manouvers off the rail to score maximum points.

We had 2x 45min jam sessions and the riders were scored on their lines. The top 2 riders from each heat progressed to the 45 minute final in which the riders best lines were judged to be crowned champion. In the end 2 of the finalists were tied for first and the judges had to go to a tie breaker to decide the champ and in the end it was Darren “Two-Step” Turner who snuck past Dylan Mitchell for the win and the R4,000 prize.

Final Positions:

1 – Darren Turner
2 – Dylan Mitchell
3 – Justin White
4 – Russell Daymond

Best Trick – Troy Allers (BS 360 Shuv-it out of the pool)

How did you get into wake boarding? My older brother, Jason, started riding a few years before me. I always used to go watch him at the cable until one day I decided to try it. After my first try, I was hooked.

Gnarliest injury? Towards the end of last year, I fell on a scarecrow off of the kicker and tore the ligaments in my knee. My leg got put into a full plaster cast and I was out for 4 months which sucked!

Favourite trick? Blind 360 off the kicker.

What’s it like being the girl wake board sister with 2 brothers wake boarding in the family? It’s awesome. I have fun going riding with them and we all push each other. My younger brother is still quite new to the sport but my older brother has been wakeboarding for longer than I have so he coaches me quite abit and encourages me a lot.

Who is your favourite rider and why? Nick Davies, he has his own unique style of riding and doing tricks.

If you weren’t a wakeboarder what would you be? Nothing comes to mind, I can’t imagine not being on the water.

What’s the one trick that gives you trouble and why? Definitely a railey. I’ve had a few concussions from this trick so I find it super scary.

Cable or behind the boat? Cable. I enjoy boat but don’t get the opportunity to ride much boat. I stay close to a cable so I ride way more cable than boat. I always have fun riding cable and love the obstacles.

Any weird phobias? Scared of the dark but not sure if that classifies as weird.

What are you most proud of in your wake boarding career so far? Becoming a Roxy teamrider and winning both boat and cable SA nationals last year.

What do you plan to do once you wrap up matric? I want to go travel and wakeboard around the world. I would also l like to compete in international events.

Groms That Rip: The Stuckey Boys

gavin stuckey, trent stucky

After watching this video I feel like i want to give up wakeboarding…. Trent and Gavin Stuckey have been killing it lately, tearing it up at Lake Ronix as well as dominating the features at OWC. Typically, kids this age have a hard time adding any sort of style to their tricks, but when I saw Trent air up that unit staircase, bonk the end, and then frontside 270 into a blind landing, It blew me away.

The FreeRide Project 2 – A Proper Kiteboarding movie

The “FreerRide” project is an idea that started in 2011. Four riders from different brands started traveling together and filming how they wanted the sport to look and be represented.

The FreeRide Project 2 - Kiteboarding

Four riders quoted saying, this is a no-mess, un-brand motivated representation of what we want kiteboarding to be and what it means to us as we travel to some of the best spots and biggest wakestyle events throughout the year, to just have fun and ride!

This video goes to South Africa, Greece, Cape Hatteras, Egypt and Russia, with some kiteboarding and wakeboarding action in each spot.

Sit back and enjoy, the video will be available for free download soon. The idea being that you can burn your own DVD/movie, share it at home or play it in your shops!! Spread the word!!

A big THANKS to all involved who made this possible and helped us along the way! The KiteLauncher!!

Black Dog

Crank up your speakers! Black Dog from Cheerwithnico.com

The concept of this short film was simply bringing the feeling of rock onto water. The idea came up some time ago and last year’s fall we got together to realize it.

Black Dog

Five riders thrift shopped for some dope ass clothes and spent a few days at Wakeboard Langenfeld to film for this clip. Manu and the crew turning into beast on the water.

It was very obvious that we would need an amazing song for this. What would fit better than the band with the biggest influence in Rock, Led Zeppelin.

Well in case you missed the boat. This is how The Crew at Dirty Habits does summer.

dirty habits video

Amongst the Chaos this summer and all the international legends visiting The Dirty Habits crib, including Nitro Circus’ Erik Roner, Wake legends Shawn Watson and Kevin Henshaw, World champ freestyle paraglider Marvin Ogger, extreme kiters Ruben Lenten, Robbie Naish… we also had had Freeride Project and Riplslix Productions founder Tom Court spend the summer with us along with Crane jumper, Nick Jacobsen. Between the 3 boys including Mr. Dirty Habits Graham Howes, 3 very different projects began to merge into one common idea, The quest for epicness. and although the lines are still blurred between our different lives existing at other parts of the world, one thing remains certain. we sure as hell are having a good time. Here is the evidence. the teaser… just the tip of the iceburg.

Distinction, Pure wakestyle with Sam Light and Alex Fox

Wakestyle now, is a term thrown around pretty loosely these days in kiteboarding, which is unusual because as recently as two years ago, it was a term that essentially only referred to about %1 of the kiteboarding population. However with the recent emergence of bindings on the world tour, you see more and more people throwing that word around. It seems now as if almost all the top pros fall into the same category, what follows can be considered the distinction… In Patrick Wieland’s new short film “Distinction” produced by Mauicio Abreu, riders Alex Fox and Sam Light establish the standard and return the word “wakestyle” to its original roots.

Dirty Habits Wake & Beer Fest results and pics

Dirty Habits Wakepark opening went down like a cracker. With cold beers, small bikini’s, great music, awesome crowd and ofcourse some killer wakeboard action.

With the opening of this new rail park in Cape Town it wouldn’t be an easy challenge walking away with the gold. The park is a completely new set up and the only one of it’s kind in SA, using the  Solid Air Ride Systems (Twin tower system) so the riders only had an 8 minute practice set to try out this system, with some advanced testicles like the new 10m Handrail being one of the features, the boys were forced to step up their game, with any hope of competing in the 2014 Ultimate X – eXtreme Games. with the final consisting  of Brother’s Jacques Labuschagne and Marius Labuschagne (Liquid Force) , Stuart Gutridge (Hyperlite) and Jeanu Du Plooy (CNTRL), the crowd was inline for an awesome showdown.
