This month, Dylan Lightfoot, 2014’s SA surf champion in the U/20 division, Billabong U/20 Mossel Bay Champion and Jeffreys Bay RVCA supertrial winner, joined up with Matti Buys, the renowned SA wakeskate champ, in Johannesburg for a few days.
As Johannesburg is landlocked, Matti set out to show Dylan how the Vaalies get their board on water fix in Gauteng.

On Thursday the 6th of November, we traveled with Dylan and Matti to the Vaal River to join Shaun Faccio from Tige boats. The Tige boat produces a wake of about one and a half foot. Dylan, obviously not a rookie when it comes to waves, showed the locals how to ride this endless wave on his surfboard.
Matti is a natural on most boards and kept his cool following Dylan’s example, but then he set the pace on the wakeskate, showing Dylan how wearing shoes and a shirt are the stylish way to ride on water.

The next day, Matti and Dylan hit Stoke City cable park, Matti’s home turf for some wakeskate training.

Matti described his friend’s skills by saying,
“Dyl is one of the most talented dudes I know. He killed wake surfing on Thursday and then went out on Friday with the wake-skate and stuck the kicker and then a pop shuv on his first try.”

Dylan was stoked with the experience,
“It was motivating having Matti cheer me on and give me some coaching tips on how to hit the kicker and lay down a pop shuv. It was really cool to see Matti in action, his unpredictable approach with a cool mellow style is awesome to watch, I definitely gathered inspiration from watching him.”

These unusual friends have both just returned from internationl trips.

Matti spent the USA summer traveling with the US Wakeskate tour, in between the tour he joined the SA Cable team in Norway for Cable Worlds, returning to the US to spend time with the legendary wakeskater and filmmaker, Dieter Humpsch.

Dylan recently returned from a trip to Portugal where he competed in the U/20 World Champs, he’s also recently been to Brazil where he participated in a 6 star qualifying series event.
Dylan and Matti met up in California during the US Open. They cruised around together, visiting the FOX head offices, and catching some local surf.

Dylan has one more trip for the year – he heads to China for two more competitions at the end of November, and then he’ll begin planning his campaign for the beginning of next year, which will more than likely include a trip to Hawaii and Australia.

Matti plans to fit in a few wakeskate road trips this summer. He’s also hoping to see a few wakeskate only contests go down this year in SA.

We are excited to see athletes crossing paths and encouraging each other in their pursuits.

We wish them the best of luck as they travel the world representing our beautiful South Africa in water sports.

Ruben Lenten chasing the ultimate storm

CHASING THE ULTIMATE STORM TO FLY HARD

In 2005, Dutch kiteboarder Ruben Lenten participated in Red Bull King of the Air, the most extreme kiteboarding event in the world. “Since the inception of this event in 1999, the jumps became bigger and bigger” says Ruben Lenten. He traveled to Hawaii where he competed with the best riders in the world. “The final was between sports legend Robby Naish and myself. A dream come true”. Ruben Lenten won. Since then, the event had a break of a few years, but early February Red Bull King of the Air is back. This time in South Africa, where Ruben Lenten and 23 other riders will push themselves to the max. He has not been idle in recent years. The clip Ruben Lenten produced together with Red Bull and Eyeforce shows his most important goal in life: ‘fly hard’.

Extreme Kiteboarding in Ireland & Holland – Ruben Lenten 2013

“The clip was created when I had the idea to capture my signature style of extreme kiteboarding. This is only possible when the conditions are perfect. In the clip we have been monitoring the wind forecasts at different spots to get the ultimate storm. The predictions for Ireland looked perfect, but unfortunately the storm lost all its power over night and it was impossible to fly high enough. Miraculously an even better storm appeared on the radar for the Netherlands. I could not believe my eyes, exactly what we needed. A real Dutch autumn storm. It was the perfect playground for me. ”

“Throughout the year I am always searching for the best conditions and projects to keep on pushing the sport. In the time coming up I will mainly focus on the Red Bull King of the Air event and the development of even better products to go higher and harder. I will also be shooting new sick footage and work on organizing national events to get extreme kiteboarding to a higher level.”

“2012 has been a great year and I am satisfied with my achieved successes and personal development. Together with Mystic and Red Bull I have done some extraordinary projects that have pushed kiteboarding and myself to new hights. In South Africa and in the Netherlands we organized two extreme kiteboarding events to help young talented riders get better and prepare themselves for the Red Bull King of the Air. My snowkite cliff jump in Norway also pushed my boundaries and gave me an adrenaline boost. The last months I have put all my effort in getting as fit as possible, mentally and physically and I enjoy it to the maximum. Every year a step higher, I love it!”

Red Bull athlete Ruben Lenten is an extreme kiteboarder, always searching for the biggest storms around the world.
After a disappointing trip to Ireland, Ruben heads back to the homeland where one of the year’s fiercest storms is about to hit the coast of Holland, and Ruben is more than ready for it.

First Ever 1080 Landed By 12-Year-Old Skateboarder Tom Schaar

Tom Schaar, 12 years old, landed the first 1080

For years the holy grail of all skateboard tricks, the 1080, has eluded the biggest and most talented stars in skateboarding. While many have tried, it was never landed — that is until now.

From the most unlikely of places, it was not a super star skateboarder that made the historic first, but a twelve-year-old skate prodigy from Malibu, California, named Tom Schaar.

As Tom’s extraordinary talent became evident, during the eight short years he’s been skating, it seemed like he might have the 1080 in his grip. The one problem? The MegaRamp used for practice at the Woodward West camp provides some of the speed and velocity needed, but the 50-foot gap in the ramp hindered Tom’s ability to keep that momentum going all the way through to the quarter pipe to land the trick successfully.

By teaming up with Red Bull, they were able to bridge the gap (literally) by creating a custom built roll-over feature, allowing Tom to drop in on the 70-foot-tall MegaRamp and roll right over the giant gap. As a result, Tom was able to maintain his speed and his run resulted in the first-ever successfully landed 1080 (three complete spins) on the 27-foot-tall quarter pipe.

Italo Romano, Legless Pro Skater

Italo Romano made the cut to the Semi-Finals at Tampa Pro this weekend not because he has no legs, but because he ripped. What an inspiration. What’s your excuse for not skateboarding?

The 23 year old Italo lost his limbs while playing with friends on a train at the age of 13. But he refused to let it get him down, with strong will power he took up skateboarding, not only can he pull off some crazy tricks i dream of, but it has some serious steez to go with it.

Italo Romano lives in Curitiba, Brazil
