Windtown, Langebaan with Tom Court

When the wind blows 6 days a week in Bloubergstrand during summer it’s really easy to get stuck in a routine; Big Bay session at 9am, Kite beach at 2, and downwinder to Haakgat for sunset. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not complaining, but sometimes you just have to get away, ride some different spots, session some different conditions, and Langebaan is just that. A fresh escape from Cape Town. Dirty Habits Boardriders Magazine was invited to WINDTOWN Lagoon Resort, Restaurant & Spa for a few days with Tom Court, Sophie Mathews, Nick Catelan, Graham Howes, Candace Liu and RipSlix Prductions.

Tom Court was busy on this trip with filming for the Freeride Project with Aaron Hadlow, Sam Light, and James Boulding. Traveling with Tom is a very unique experience, he has a constant entourage following him, He has camera’s following him, girlfriends pumping his kites and laying his lines (Sophie girls need to take pointers from you), a guy to repairs his helicopter when he crashes it (Chris Willmott),  he even has The Kite Launcher to launch and land his kites. He suffered an injury whilst training for the Red Bull King Of the Air which meant and even bigger support crew to tighten his boots and other stuff he couldn’t reach.

Tom Court

It’s a wonderful place, 200m from Langebaan Kitebeach, were all the action goes down. Restaurants, pubs, kiteshops, lessons; it’s were it all happens. Then you can hop in the car and less than 5 minutes you’ll be standing at Shark Bay, one of the best kite spots in SA. Waist deep, turquoise, flat water, for as far as you can see and most of the time you’ll be riding in board shorts or a bikini.

When you done with your 8 hour kite season, sunburned and dehydrated, the oasis that is WINDTOWN awaits you, Totally protected from the wind, and with a pool side bar, it’s a trap that makes it very hard to leave.

The Kite Show

Episode 9
kiteboarding

This Episode was shot in Cape Town towards the end of the South Africa summer season and we are joined by steezy Brit Tom Court as guest host who gives us the benefit of his opinion on the features and riders appearing in this episode. Keahi de Aboitiz won our ‘2012 Video of the Year’ competition voted for by you with his ‘Hawaii Sessions’ flick, and we get his reaction to such a prestigious award. Tom Court joins his boys Aaron Hadlow and James Boulding for an interview at the Dirty Habits Mansion in Cape Town with Jim focusing on the filming of Freeride Project 2 (Sam Light almost made it back from the cable… but the filming was just too good we hear).

Jim also sits down with Ryan Evans, Rich Sabo and Sam Medysky from Best to hear how they’ve recently expanded their riding team to include the likes of Youri Zoon and Ruben Lenten. We announce the winner of the Best Profanity board and launch the North Trust bar competition. The Red Bull King of the Air dominates the news section as our host Jim was a judge, so he caught loads of reaction from that and we also fill you in on the latest world tour news. This episode’s Move of the Month features a bunch of Amercian Gangstas, Youri Zoon relives winning the 2012 PKRA World Title in Mystic Moments and we close the show out with our video of the year 2012, Hawaii Sessions.

Dirty Habits Boardriders Magazine will be publishing all future episodes of The Kite Show. so you want miss a thing.

Red Bull King of the Air Green Light – Sunday 3rd Feb

The World’s top Kiteboarders to descend on Cape Town for Red
Bull King of the Air 2013

“Green” light for the Red Bull King of the Air 2013.
As charts and websites are confirming the possibility to have great weather and wind conditions for the coming weekend, this is your “OFFICIAL CALL” for the Red Bull King of the Air 2013.
With a cold-front hitting the cape peninsula on saturday night the expectations are to have “proper southerly wind” starting form the late morning of Sunday 03 Feb, sharply increasing to 30/35 knots during the day. Together with a long period moderate swell to complete the right ingredients for “perfect” conditions.
Get Down to Big Bay on Sunday 03, for the Biggest and most extreme Kite comp in history.
Press Release.

The much anticipated return of Red Bull King of the Air has seen kiteboarders the world over doing
anything to get their hands on an entry. Sixteen of the world’s best as well as eight wildcards have
been selected to compete.

CAPE TOWN (South Africa) Red Bull King of the Air returns to the fore after an eight year
hiatus since the last running of the event in Maui, USA and wind patterns are currently
looking favourable for the window period of 1 – 15 February at Big Bay, Blouberg on Cape
Town’s coastline.

Sixteen invited kiteboarders from around the world will be joined by eight wildcards.

Included in the lineup are extreme kiteboarder Ruben Lenten (NED), compatriot and
world number 1 in 2012 Youri Zoon (NED), Lewis Crathern(UK), who recently jumped over the Brighton and Worthing piers, and local wildcard Oswald Smith who goes into the competition having just won SA Champs.

The judging panel consisting of fearless female kiteboarder Susi Mai, editor of Kiteworld
Magazine and presenter of ‘The Kite Show’ Jim Gaunt and South African original Red Bull
King of the Air alumnus Greg Tijsse will be watching the water to gauge height, style and
creativity each kiteboarder executes their movement with.

The newly developed ‘flag out’ competition format is unlike any others – it gives each
kiteboarder the opportunity to pull their best moves and score high. Four riders hit the water
wearing different colour rash vests that matching a corresponding flag on the beach. After
an allocated time, the rider with the lowest score will be flagged out (flag will be lowered) and
must leave the water. The last man standing is the winner.

The event will also feature the godfather of wind-based watersports Robby Naish who will be
in Cape Town to put the title hopefuls through their paces in the lead up to the event. Robby
has multiple World Titles across windsurfing and kiteboarding disciplines and still competes
internationally, at the tender age of 49.

Ruben Lenten chasing the ultimate storm

CHASING THE ULTIMATE STORM TO FLY HARD

Images:  Erwin Polanc and Ydwer.com)

In 2005, Dutch kiteboarder Ruben Lenten participated in Red Bull King of the Air, the most extreme kiteboarding event in the world. “Since the inception of this event in 1999, the jumps became bigger and bigger” says Ruben Lenten. He traveled to Hawaii where he competed with the best riders in the world. “The final was between sports legend Robby Naish and myself. A dream come true”. Ruben Lenten won. Since then, the event had a break of a few years, but early February Red Bull King of the Air is back. This time in South Africa, where Ruben Lenten and 23 other riders will push themselves to the max. He has not been idle in recent years. The clip Ruben Lenten produced together with Red Bull and Eyeforce shows his most important goal in life: ‘fly hard’.

Extreme Kiteboarding in Ireland & Holland – Ruben Lenten 2013

ruben lenten new movie

“The clip was created when I had the idea to capture my signature style of extreme kiteboarding. This is only possible when the conditions are perfect. In the clip we have been monitoring the wind forecasts at different spots to get the ultimate storm. The predictions for Ireland looked perfect, but unfortunately the storm lost all its power over night and it was impossible to fly high enough. Miraculously an even better storm appeared on the radar for the Netherlands. I could not believe my eyes, exactly what we needed. A real Dutch autumn storm. It was the perfect playground for me. ”

ruben lenten mega loop

“Throughout the year I am always searching for the best conditions and projects to keep on pushing the sport. In the time coming up I will mainly focus on the Red Bull King of the Air event and the development of even better products to go higher and harder. I will also be shooting new sick footage and work on organizing national events to get extreme kiteboarding to a higher level.”

ruben lenten

“2012 has been a great year and I am satisfied with my achieved successes and personal development. Together with Mystic and Red Bull I have done some extraordinary projects that have pushed kiteboarding and myself to new hights. In South Africa and in the Netherlands we organized two extreme kiteboarding events to help young talented riders get better and prepare themselves for the Red Bull King of the Air. My snowkite cliff jump in Norway also pushed my boundaries and gave me an adrenaline boost. The last months I have put all my effort in getting as fit as possible, mentally and physically and I enjoy it to the maximum. Every year a step higher, I love it!”
