Matti Buys takes Dylan Lightfoot surfing in Joburg

This month, Dylan Lightfoot, 2014’s SA surf champion in the U/20 division, Billabong U/20 Mossel Bay Champion and Jeffreys Bay RVCA supertrial winner, joined up with Matti Buys, the renowned SA wakeskate champ, in Johannesburg for a few days.
As Johannesburg is landlocked, Matti set out to show Dylan how the Vaalies get their board on water fix in Gauteng.

On Thursday the 6th of November, we traveled with Dylan and Matti to the Vaal River to join Shaun Faccio from Tige boats. The Tige boat produces a wake of about one and a half foot. Dylan, obviously not a rookie when it comes to waves, showed the locals how to ride this endless wave on his surfboard.
Matti is a natural on most boards and kept his cool following Dylan’s example, but then he set the pace on the wakeskate, showing Dylan how wearing shoes and a shirt are the stylish way to ride on water.

The next day, Matti and Dylan hit Stoke City cable park, Matti’s home turf for some wakeskate training.

Matti described his friend’s skills by saying,
“Dyl is one of the most talented dudes I know. He killed wake surfing on Thursday and then went out on Friday with the wake-skate and stuck the kicker and then a pop shuv on his first try.”

Dylan was stoked with the experience,
“It was motivating having Matti cheer me on and give me some coaching tips on how to hit the kicker and lay down a pop shuv. It was really cool to see Matti in action, his unpredictable approach with a cool mellow style is awesome to watch, I definitely gathered inspiration from watching him.”

These unusual friends have both just returned from internationl trips.

Matti spent the USA summer traveling with the US Wakeskate tour, in between the tour he joined the SA Cable team in Norway for Cable Worlds, returning to the US to spend time with the legendary wakeskater and filmmaker, Dieter Humpsch.

Dylan recently returned from a trip to Portugal where he competed in the U/20 World Champs, he’s also recently been to Brazil where he participated in a 6 star qualifying series event.
Dylan and Matti met up in California during the US Open. They cruised around together, visiting the FOX head offices, and catching some local surf.

Dylan has one more trip for the year – he heads to China for two more competitions at the end of November, and then he’ll begin planning his campaign for the beginning of next year, which will more than likely include a trip to Hawaii and Australia.

Matti plans to fit in a few wakeskate road trips this summer. He’s also hoping to see a few wakeskate only contests go down this year in SA.

We are excited to see athletes crossing paths and encouraging each other in their pursuits.

We wish them the best of luck as they travel the world representing our beautiful South Africa in water sports.

Dirty Habits: You are currently in Orlando living and riding with SA home boy Dieter Humpsch at his home (Little Africa) in Florida, One of the best wakeskaters in the World. Tell us about more.

Matti: Its pretty nuts, im not going to lie. I cant believe how lucky i am not only to be staying with one of my favourite riders but also to be shown the ropes not only in wakeskating but also in life in general by him. i could’nt call a better place home than Little Africa while im in the US. i am super blessed.

wakeskate video

Dirty Habits: Seems like a insane set up at Dieters spot, with pool gap in the garden, a lake and a bunch of pro wakeskaters getting up to no good. Walk us through your average day at Little Africa.

Matti: Haha, well it will normally start off with Diets thinking up some creative way to wake us up like flying the RC helicopter into our window or setting Brutus on us, then we will start filling up the pools and get down to some breakfast, usually cookie crisp or something with peanut butter, after this we will assess the conditions and decide on what we want to ride, either boat, jet ski or the pool gap, some days we will head to Battle Falls or try and get some riding in at one of the cables, after a good midday set we will either head out to lunch or make something at home, this is generally where we discuss what our next rail or pool gap invention will look like, then we will have another set on one of the above options all depending on whether or not we have a typical Florida afternoon thundershower(hence how i found the time to answer this interview) after which we will probably head out to Lowes hardware to get some form of materials for a build or repair or just something to add to the aesthetics of Little Africa, then we will end off the day with some dinner and either a skate on the mini-ramp or some XBox in the garage.

Dirty Habits: Wakeskating seems to be becoming a lot more popular now, with some sick events around the globe, and a solid wakeskate tour with some decent stops. Tell us about the wakeskate industry, and how we can grow it in SA.

Matti: The Wakeskate industry seems to be growing more and more by the year and with its diversity it really opens up a lot of doors for dfferent angles of attack, with the boat side, or jet ski riding as well as the winch and system 2.0 stuff seen on the wakeskate tour. i think everyone in SA is putting in some effort to do it, i just think the sport needs to be brought to the people more with proper, legit and safe contest set ups in Urban areas as well as near schools rather than out on a lake where exposure is limited.

wakeskate pics

Dirty Habits: You’ve been riding with some of the best wakeskaters in the world this last month, tell us about the crew there and how it is influencing your riding and progression.

Matti: Most of the guys here are really cool and pretty much anyone you meet can really throw down on a, its been super fun to ride with some of the legends and also the newer guys who throw down. Seeing them ride infront of you defintely motivates you a lot more and gets you really excited to go out and learn something new.

Dirty Habits: Tell us about wakeskating in SA, do you see it growing enough for there to be a pure wakeskate event. what would be the perfect wakeskate event?

Matti: we used to have ‘Welcome To Summer Jam’ which was a reallu amazing wakeskate only event in SA that i really felt was moving in the right direction as well as West Coast wakeskate Jam which was also really good. i truely believe that wakeboarding and wakeskating collaberated contests are neccesary but also the more wakeskate only contests we have the faster the sport will grow and the more wakeskate only groms we will produce.

matti buys

Dirty Habits: If you could change anything about SA Wake boarding what would it be?

Matti: i would just want more Wake The Line, Wakeskate Tour vibed contests as opposed to that of the usual federation affiliated contests. The federation contests are neccessary no doubt, but i dont feel that they appeal to spectators as much of say Ultimate X does.

Dieter Humpsch

Big Up to Matti’s mentor Dieter Humpsch (Pictured), he’s taken a lot of SA wake crew under his wing.. and his couch

Dirty Habits: What are your plans for the rest of the year

Matti: i land back home on the 5th of September and then the following weekend the Cable Tour starts again in Joburg, followed by a few more events in September that i would like to go to. i was looking forwards to spending a couple weeks in Cape Town shredding the cable and possibly winching during the end of September to the beginning of October but certain circumstances may have caused these plans to change. Other than that i would like to do a few more wakeskating related road trips as well as just hanging out with everyone back home for our summer and comp season. i would definitely like to release a few more web clips as the years goes by.

SA Boat Champs Stop 3: Cape Town Results & Pics

The 2013 SA Wakeboaridng and wakeskate Champs Stop 3 went down this weekend at Rietvlei in Cape Town this weekend, the condition were super tough with gusts of over 35knots blasted riders side on and almost flattened the wake at times. Despite these gnarly conditions and surviving on the water everyone was throwing down hard. Thanks to all the sponsors and everyone involved. Sunburn, windburn and big smiles all around.
