This month, Dylan Lightfoot, 2014’s SA surf champion in the U/20 division, Billabong U/20 Mossel Bay Champion and Jeffreys Bay RVCA supertrial winner, joined up with Matti Buys, the renowned SA wakeskate champ, in Johannesburg for a few days.
As Johannesburg is landlocked, Matti set out to show Dylan how the Vaalies get their board on water fix in Gauteng.
On Thursday the 6th of November, we traveled with Dylan and Matti to the Vaal River to join Shaun Faccio from Tige boats. The Tige boat produces a wake of about one and a half foot. Dylan, obviously not a rookie when it comes to waves, showed the locals how to ride this endless wave on his surfboard.
Matti is a natural on most boards and kept his cool following Dylan’s example, but then he set the pace on the wakeskate, showing Dylan how wearing shoes and a shirt are the stylish way to ride on water.
The next day, Matti and Dylan hit Stoke City cable park, Matti’s home turf for some wakeskate training.
Matti described his friend’s skills by saying,
“Dyl is one of the most talented dudes I know. He killed wake surfing on Thursday and then went out on Friday with the wake-skate and stuck the kicker and then a pop shuv on his first try.”
Dylan was stoked with the experience,
“It was motivating having Matti cheer me on and give me some coaching tips on how to hit the kicker and lay down a pop shuv. It was really cool to see Matti in action, his unpredictable approach with a cool mellow style is awesome to watch, I definitely gathered inspiration from watching him.”
These unusual friends have both just returned from internationl trips.
Matti spent the USA summer traveling with the US Wakeskate tour, in between the tour he joined the SA Cable team in Norway for Cable Worlds, returning to the US to spend time with the legendary wakeskater and filmmaker, Dieter Humpsch.
Dylan recently returned from a trip to Portugal where he competed in the U/20 World Champs, he’s also recently been to Brazil where he participated in a 6 star qualifying series event.
Dylan and Matti met up in California during the US Open. They cruised around together, visiting the FOX head offices, and catching some local surf.
Dylan has one more trip for the year – he heads to China for two more competitions at the end of November, and then he’ll begin planning his campaign for the beginning of next year, which will more than likely include a trip to Hawaii and Australia.
Matti plans to fit in a few wakeskate road trips this summer. He’s also hoping to see a few wakeskate only contests go down this year in SA.
We are excited to see athletes crossing paths and encouraging each other in their pursuits.
We wish them the best of luck as they travel the world representing our beautiful South Africa in water sports.

The rail park is ideally situated in a quarry with 100m high cliffs surrounding it, blocking the predominant South East summer winds.
The water is warm with a huge grass beach, braai facilities, a bar, good fishing with Trout, Carb and Bass, and an chill island that lies alongside the cable and obstacles.
The Twin Tower System (Solid Air Ride System) is the best way to hit rails and kickers, as no other towing device can give you the same amount of time on the obstacles. When you fall, you get picked up instantly and can try that trick again. The turns at each end are quicker than a boat, jet ski or lap of a full cable and allow you to hit the same rail over 30 times in a ten minute session!
No more swimming to the shore and then walking back to the dock.
Learning to Wakeboard and Kiteboard
Ideal for beginners to learn wakeboard and kiteboarding water starts as you . The cable can be stopped when the rider falls and returned back to the rider to attempt the water start again at their own pace. it’s also simulates a kite boarding waterstart as the cable is at a very high angle similar to that of a kite.
The main aim of this cable is to build an advanced rail park to run pro wake events along with the quarry’s mainstream events which they host there, including international artist, DJ’s transparties, beach parties, beer fests, jazz days and more.
As this is a new project and intended to grown and support the industry, these Rates are Valid until 1 December 2014 Only and will be adjusted after the month trial period.

One of Google’s most senior executive’s has broken Felix Baumgartner’s record for the highest parachute jump in history.
Alan Eustace, 57, a senior vice president of Knowledge at Google, was this morning lifted by a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet of helium, from an abandoned runway at an airport in New Mexico.
A well-known computer scientist, he fell faster than the speed of sound and broke Baumgartner’s world altitude record set just two years ago by jumping from 135,000 feet.
Mr Eustace spent two hours and seven minutes climbing to an altitude of 136,401 feet (41,575m or nearly 26 miles). He began his freefall at 135,890 feet.
Wearing a self-contained space suit similar to those used in the international space station, the computer scientist used an explosive device to separate himself from the balloon which elevated him.
He descended towards the earth at speeds which peaked at more than 800mph, breaking the sound barrier and creating a sonic boom.
After landing, he said: “You could see the darkness of space and you could see the atmosphere, which I had never seen before.

Is this the future of wakeboarding?
Get a taste of Raph Derome’s brilliant new wakeboarding edit with a teaser for Beyond Perception.
People have different perceptions of Raph Derome. As a guy that prefers to keep a low profile and living the life of a self-described introvert, it’s sometimes difficult to express who he really is to those around him. But that’s why he lets his wakeboarding speak for him.
With an endless drive and dedication to wakeboarding, Raph is truly in it for the love of the game. Never quite satisfied, wakeboarding to him is about the constant pursuit of progression and evolving his own unique vision of the sport.
Beyond Perception, made by Red Bull Media House in partnership with Malibu Boats and Billabong, is the product of two years of Raph’s tireless effort to capture the soul of wakeboarding and a visual declaration to the masses that there is much more to wakeboarding beyond contests.
Get a taster in the above clip of Raph’s trip to some of his favorite spots including Florida, his home province of Quebec and a big-city shred at Toronto’s Ontario Place

Kiteboarders from around the world gathered in northeastern Brazil this past Saturday for the first edition of the Red Bull Rally dos Ventos, a unique competition that sees athletes travel across both sand and water. Local hero Alexandre Neto won the men’s event, with Kristiin Oja from Estonia the fastest woman.
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, also known as the wettest desert on the planet, hosted the first ever Red Bull Rally dos Ventos this Saturday, a one-of-a-kind kiteboard competition where athletes must overcome sand dunes up to 45m tall to reach the natural lagoons that make the place unique.
On a course measuring 16km, the rules were simple: the first to arrive at the finish line wins. The challenge, though, was very complicated, riders normally used to water were suddenly having to also deal with sand.
Among the starting field were athletes from four countries, with a strong contingent of local riders keen to impress. The winner of the men’s competition was Alexandre Neto, who is currently in the top 5 standings on the PKRA World Tour. The Brasilian beat Carlos “Baby” Mário on the final metres to claim top spot.
“I was in first place during almost the entire race, but right before the end I made a mistake and Carlos moved into first place,” said Neto after the race. “When we got to the last dune, I saw that he picked a path through the dune and I decided to go to his right. Fortunately I found water and could accelerate over the lagoon to win the race.”
The women’s event also saw a high-class field take on this unique desert challenge. Among the riders participating were two former world champions, the Brazilian Bruna Kajiya and the American Susi Mai, but it was Kristiin Oja from Estonia who outshone them all to claim victory.
“I did not have a good start and I saw a lot of kites in front of me. As anyone could pick different paths, I did not realise that I had passed all of them. I was really surprised when I was told that I was the fastest woman. I was super happy to be in first place and I’m even happier now the result has been confirmed,” smiled Oja in the finish area.
Final Standings Men:
1. Alexandre Neto, BRA – 37.3s
2. Carlos Mário (Bebê), BRA – 37.45s
3. Bruno Lobo, BRA – 39.12s
4. Wanderson Souza, BRA – 40.47s
5. Roberto Veiga, BRA – 50.05s
“The event Wake the Goon which was proudly supported by Fox Racing South Africa and this saw some of SA’s most talented wakeskaters battle it out behind the winch for the R5,000 prize purse. La Mercy Lagoon made the scene for this event and the weather was cold and windy but this did not hold the riders back as they glided through the water busting aerial manouvers out of the man made pool and hitting some radical and technical manouvers off the rail to score maximum points.
We had 2x 45min jam sessions and the riders were scored on their lines. The top 2 riders from each heat progressed to the 45 minute final in which the riders best lines were judged to be crowned champion. In the end 2 of the finalists were tied for first and the judges had to go to a tie breaker to decide the champ and in the end it was Darren “Two-Step” Turner who snuck past Dylan Mitchell for the win and the R4,000 prize.
